Questions to Ask When Decluttering

Our favorite way to start and end the day is in a clean, calm home. However, it’s not just about dusting – a relaxing space starts with how you fill it. When a room is overstuffed with things, even the cleanest space feels chaotic. That’s where decluttering comes in. It’s more than just organization—it’s a way to create a space that’s lighter, more functional, and easier to enjoy. Not to mention, it makes finding the things you actually need a breeze.

Still, we know how daunting decluttering can feel. That’s why we’re here to help! We’ve put together a few simple, yet defining questions to help you decide what stays and goes. Because a truly serene space goes beyond cleaning—it’s about intentional living.

Have you used it in the last 6 months?

If not, it’s probably unlikely you will again. As you go through your belongings, ask yourself when you last used the item. If you can’t remember, it might be time to let it go. This is a good rule of thumb for decluttering your wardrobe, kitchen, closets, and other areas of your home. Also, the same goes for things that are broken or damaged. If you haven’t fixed it in the last 6 months, it’s clearly not needed. It might be time to cut yourself some slack and let it go.

Do you love it?

The real question—if this item had dog poo on it, would you clean it or toss it? That says a lot. If an item in your home brings you happiness, that’s a good enough reason to keep it. If it doesn’t, it’s probably not holding onto.

Is this a duplicate?

For most items, you only need one. But sometimes, it’s common to accidentally accumulate duplicates. How many pairs of black shoes or notebooks do you really need? Having more than one can create unnecessary clutter. When decluttering, ask yourself if having duplicates is really necessary, or if you can get by with just one. You can put others in storage until you need them.

Do you have a designated home for it?

Everything you keep should have a place in your home. Otherwise, it feels like clutter. When everything has a designated spot, it’s easier to keep your space organized and clutter-free. Ask yourself where the item will live, and if you can’t find a place for it, it might be time to let it go.

You can take this one step further, too! Choose a cute, designated “catch all” basket to set random things when you’re in a hurry. This keeps your home looking sharp, even when you’re busy.

Would you buy this again today?

If you were in a store right now, would you actually spend your hard-earned cash on this item? If the answer is no, it’s a sign that the item is no longer serving a purpose for you. Sometimes we hold onto things for sentimental reasons, out of guilt, or because we feel like we should keep them. However, it’s healthy to purge unwanted things, even gifts gifts. Our loved ones wouldn’t want us holding onto things out of guilt.

Lastly, it’s natural to feel wasteful getting rid of things. (Especially if you grew up not having a lot; it’s hard to shift the scarcity mentality.) However, what’s actually wasteful is keeping something we aren’t using, when someone else could benefit from it. Donating or selling items that are still in good condition can help others while also freeing up space in your home.

Decluttering is a great opportunity to reassess your belongings and make sure they align with your current lifestyle. Also, it doesn’t have to be a dreaded task. When you ask yourself these simple questions, you can make thoughtful decisions and reduce the overwhelm that comes with too much stuff. Remember, it’s not about getting rid of everything, it’s about keeping what matters and making room for a calmer environment. At the end of the day, you’ll be left with a home that truly feels like you and reflects what you love.
