Natural Cleaning Tips for the Best Smelling Kitchen

Ahhh, home sweet – what’s that smell? It happens to the best of us. Between life, kids, and summer bbq prep, our kitchens go from fresh to funky in a hurry. That’s why we’ve put together our favorite natural cleaning tips to keep your kitchen smelling fresh and inviting.

First, take the trash out + clean the trash can

Low hanging fruit, right? Be sure to wipe inside and outside the trash can, removing any build up as you go. Going forward, one of the simplest ways to prevent kitchen odors is to take the trash out daily, especially if it contains food scraps.

Next, target built-up grease

Not only is it a house fire risk, rancid fats create an unpleasant smell that lingers long after cooking. (It’s best described as a decomposition smell, so make this a top priority.) Also, it clings to your stovetop, backsplash, the underside of cabinets, and especially microwaves. In this house cleaner’s opinion, it’s one of the easiest ways to freshen up the way a kitchen smells. Use a natural degreaser, or even baking soda, to cut through the grease and leave a fresh, clean scent.

Clean the garbage disposal

This is another common source of kitchen odors and is easy to remedy. We’re biased but a few lemon peels down the drain leaves a fresh natural odor. However, baking soda actually breaks down the fats causing the odors, eliminating the problem at the source. Start with a half cup of baking soda down the drain, chase it with a cup of hot water. Let it work its magic for a few minutes, then rinse with hot water.

Natural Cleaning Tip: We recommend lemon peels or baking soda but not both at the same time. (Acids + alkalines aren’t friendly.)

Clean the cooktop + drip pans

Aha, another place for oils to congregate. A kitchen degreaser, baking soda slurry, or even dish soap is a good choice here. If yours has drip pans, be sure to soak them or replace them periodically. Additionally, that style of stovetop pops up completely, exposing an open area underneath where food particles and spills contribute to kitchen odors.

Don’t forget the refrigerator

Odors can also originate from your refrigerator and circulate throughout the home. Regularly check for expired or spoiled food and dispose of it. Also, wipe down shelves and drawers with a baking soda slurry to eliminate lingering smells. Plus, leave an open container of baking soda in the fridge to absorb odors.

Make a natural potpourri

We make this all winter-long when the air is dry. Simply simmer a pot of water with lemon peels, cinnamon sticks, and cloves or other aromatics to create a warm, natural fragrance that will permeate your kitchen. Plus, you can drink it as tea. This natural room freshener is healthier than synthetic room sprays that release harmful VOC’s into our air.

Open the windows

On these beautiful mornings, air out the home while you’re getting ready for the day. Circulating fresh air helps keep your home smelling and feeling fresh.

Of course, we’re always happy to help keep your kitchen smelling fresh! Our natural home cleaning services create a healthier, calming space for you and your people.
